The events industry is one of the sectors that has been hit hard by the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions. The sector comprises of technical suppliers, events suppliers, events venues, freelancers, entertainers, events organisers and photographers.
Even with their loss of income, the government has sidelined the industry from the Covid-19 relief fund package. This has threatened the existence of some companies post Covid-19.
On the 5th of August 2020 the events industry, together with the technical suppliers, took part in a demonstration protest, lighting iconic place all across South Africa to raise awareness of their plight. The mission of the #LightSAred is as follows :
• Government and financial institutions extend financial relief to those who earn a living in the technical production and live events industry until we are permitted to resume work.
• Government engage with elected leaders within SACIA and the SA Events Council, and provide a platform for our voices to be heard.
• We demand that the government recognize and support the Non-Profit Organisations that are trying to sustain destitute members of the technical production and live events industry.
The table mountain, Moses Mabhida, Monte Casino and Joburg Theatre were amongst the iconic buildings to be light. The industry has actively contributed to the lives of South Africans for decades without the government’s assistance, the matter of the aid is of emergency.
